1st Neurosurgical Clinic of IASO Thessalias: Pioneering neurosurgical operation for the implementation of stereotactic valve to cancer patient

IASO Thessalias is in the forefront of specialized surgical operations in cooperation with experienced and qualified medical teams, at its state-of-the-art premises, in Larisa.

It was successfully performed for the first time, a stereotactic special-type valve implantation (Ommaya port) to cancer patient, upon the recommendation of the attending physician, the Internal Medicine Expert – Oncologist Mr. Ioannis Gkioulmpasanis. It was performed by continuous real time navigation by the state-of-the-art Medtronic’s navigator Stealth Station S8. The purpose of the surgery was the direct injection of medicines into the brain parenchyma, more accurately, for the best possible result in the treatment of the 40-year old female patient, suffering from leptomeningeal spinal cord metastases.

 

 

The Neurosurgeon Mr. Iordanis Georgiadis, Registrar of the 1st Neurosurgical Clinic of IASO Thessalias, performed the surgery. Anesthesiologist was Mr. Dimosthenis Charalampidis and the surgery’s nurse Ms. Eleni Pagana.

2nd Neurosurgical Clinic of IASO Thessalias: Immediate treatment of high –risk Hangman fracture (C2) in car accident.

A 53 years old patient with Hangman fracture in car accident was surgically treated by IASO Thessalias’s 2nd Neurosurgical Clinic.

After the completion of the required clinical laboratory testing, upper cervical segment instability was noted and a surgical operation was considered necessary.

 

 

The operation was performed by posterior cervical fusion and placement of transpedicular screw in A2 (vertebra) and lateral mass screws in A3 vertebra, offering absolute stability of the fracture.

 

 

The operation was performed by the Director of IASO Thessalias’s 2nd Neurosurgical Clinic, Mr. Stergios Brizas and the Anesthesiologist was Ms. Stella Kanti. It was performed by continuous real time navigation by the state-of-the-art Medtronic’s navigator Stealth Station S8, which was recently acquired by IASO Thessalias.

The patient was postoperatively mobilized inside 12 hours and discharged inside 24 hours of the surgical operation with full recovery from his health problem.

The key objective of surgical treatment of patients with spinal fractures is complete pain relief simultaneously with early mobilization, keeping family, psychological and financial burden to a minimum.

IASO Thessalias’s 1st Surgical Clinic: Patient’s innovative preoperative splenic artery embolization

The improvement of Medical innovation and the cooperation of experienced and expertized medical teams authorizes the performance of significant and important medical achievements in Thessaly and Greece in general.

In that regard, therefore, an innovative laparoscopic surgery was performed at IASO Thessalias, by the 1st Surgical Clinic, led by the surgeon and Director Mr. Evangelos Kanavos, in cooperation with the Scientific Competent of the Cardiac Surgery Unit Mr. Nikolaos Magkoutis and the Special Interventional Radiologist Professor Mr. Christos Rountas.

A female 70 years old patient, under treatment by the hematologist Dr. Georgios Karamarias, suffering from underlying hematologic disease that caused oversized enlargement of spleen’s size, rupture of the subdiaphragmatic space. She underwent a minimally invasive removal of the organ (spleen’s long axis approximately twenty centimeters and approximately three kilos weight).

For the minimization of intraoperative hemorrhage, the day before the operation (12 hours before the surgery) was performed at the Department of Interventional Angiography a selective proximal splenic artery embolization with intravascular delivery of nanoparticles.

The above-mentioned operation allowed the performance of the surgery with minimal blood loss, without intraoperative and postoperative complications, especially at a time, where blood and blood derivatives saving is crucial for the entire humanity.
