14/05/2021 - 1st Neurosurgery Clinic, IASO Thessalias: A small neurosurgery miracle in a brain injury procedure

A young female patient, 40, presented at the Emergency Department of IASO Thessalias due to lowered level of consciousness and vomiting episodes. Once evaluated by the Internist of the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic, Mr. Athanasios Brouziotis, she was taken to the Medical Imaging Department for an emergency brain CT. The scan revealed a large, chronic subdural hematoma in the right cerebral hemisphere, as well as an ipsilateral acute subdural hematoma, exerting pressure on the brain parenchyma, which required emergency surgery.

The patient was evaluated by the neurosurgeon, Mr. Iordanis Georgiadis, Registrar at the 1st Neurosurgery Clinic, IASO Thessalias, and was admitted for emergency surgery, with the assistance of Ms. Eleftheria Toutounopoulou, anesthesiologist. After surgery, the patient was transferred to the IASO Thessalias ICU for gradual awakening and was transferred to a ward for further monitoring on the following day. The patient was discharged 4 days later, fully mobile and without any neurological deficits.

Subdural hematomas of the brain are critical for the life of patients and must be evaluated immediately by specialists. Treatment involves surgery, aiming at optimal and fast decompression of the brain from the blood that exerts pressure on it. For such a case to be treated successfully it requires a neurosurgeon to be present in the operating room, assisted by the latest, state-of-the-art medical equipment available at IASO Thessalias.

10/03/2021 - IASO Thessalias: First unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in Greece using the NAVIO 7 robotic-assisted system

The IASO Thessalias 1st Orthopedic Clinic for Robotic Surgery of the Musculoskeletal System successfully performed the first unicompartmental knee arthroplasty in Greece, using the NAVIO 7 robotic system, headed by Mr. Konstantinos Makridis, MD, MSc, PCaosD, PhD (certified robotic system user) and Mr. Miltiadis Georgousis, MD, MSc, PhD (certified robotic system user)

The procedure was performed on a 49-year-old patient, who suffered from severe osteoarthritis in the medial compartment of the knee. Symptoms included intense pain and varus knee, rendering any physical activity very painful. Using 3D imaging and mapping the problem and anatomy of the knee perioperatively, implants were only placed in the affected area with maximum accuracy (medial compartment of the knee, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty).

The kinematics, axis and function of the knee were greatly restored and the patient was able to walk on the afternoon of the same day. He was discharged 24 hours later and was even able to walk down the Hospital stairs unassisted.

18/02/2021 - IASO Thessalias: New state-of-the-art medical equipment for diagnosis and staging of cancer patients

The fields of Pulmonology and Oncology have gone through an actual revolution in the last 10 years in terms of diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. The introduction of new diagnostic techniques and new treatment protocols has radically changed the way we treat patients with new chest lesions.

True to its vision and mission to provide quality healthcare services with dedication and professionalism, IASO Thessalias responded to the demands of modern medical practices and the needs of patients by installing the revolutionary high definition SONART SU-1 endoscopic ultrasound system by FUJIFILM Europe, aiming to secure well-rounded diagnosis and staging of patients with lung cancer, based on the latest medical standards. The new equipment includes an endoscope for invasive endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and the ground-breaking Soluscope SERIE 1 system for cleaning and disinfecting the endoscope.

By carrying out a single and safe diagnostic test within the endoscopy lab, we can now perform diagnosis and staging of the disease at the same time, limiting the need for a mediastinoscopy, which is performed in the operating room, is technically complex and may result in complications. The exam is performed under either twilight or general anesthesia, which also makes it less stressful for the patient.

After adding this endobronchial ultrasound to its arsenal, IASO Thessalias has already successfully performed a series of diagnostic and invasive exams on cancer patients. From the moment of diagnosis and staging until the optimum treatment of neoplastic diseases, patients receive the most well-rounded care, assisted by specialists within a well-structured Oncology Council and with the help of other available services (Medical Oncology Unit / Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy & Oncology Department / Radiotherapy).
